Dance

The dance program at PS 86 Bushwick Magnet Multimedia and Arts Academy engages students’ creativity and curiosity about the world around them through dance!

The curriculum follows an arts-integration model, meaning many of the units are designed to complement subjects like science, social studies, reading, and writing while adhering to common core standards. It incorporates aspects such as dance history, movement exploration, and choreography in line with the NYC Public Schools’ dance guidelines and National Core Arts Standards for dance.

Rooted in creative dance, the curriculum also highlights a variety of styles, including ballet, modern, and contemporary dance, as well as various social and global dance forms. Students not only learn physical dance skills, but come away with the ability to analyze and discuss dance, as well as articulate their unique perspectives on it.

Over the course of the year, there are a variety of dance performances as well as graduation performances for both kindergarten and fifth grade. PS 86K has partnered with dance/performing arts organizations and institutions such as Movement Research, Flamenco Vivo, Dance Parade, City Center, Together in Dance, and Inside Broadway. Often, these partnerships culminate in student performances, as well.
